THE annual running of Mendip Golf Club’s Stephenson Cup attracted 124 entrants.

Div 3 went to Andrew Shakesby with 39 points, Glynn Haddock was 2nd with 38 after count back from Dale Rowe and Will Burns. Div 2 was won by Tom Rowland with 40 points, Alan Padfield was 2nd with 39 and Jeremy Lawrence was 3rd with 38. Div 1 saw a fine score of 42 by Phil Leadbeater playing off 6, Jack Harrington was 2nd with 38 and Charlie Pike ws 3rd with 37 after count back. 

However the cup went to Sam Pratten with an outstanding 45 points even after failing to score on the 18th!  The gross winner was Jack Vowell with 74 after count back from Tommy Beveridge.

The Avalon C team recorded a 3-2 win over Long Sutton with points coming from Scott Butland/Gary Quin, Joe Cox/Malcolm Srawley and Tom Black/Charlie Holmes.This puts them top of the League at the present time.Nearest the Pin went to Alec Roberts.

The Ladies American Foursomes event saw a win for Maureen Charlton/Pauline Young with 40 points, one ahead of Bridget Rylance/Lizzie Wood. Anita Butcher/Carol Curtis were 3rd with 35 after count back.

The Ladies Rogers Cup team lost a close match to Enmore 3-4. Mendip’s wins came from Lynne Vowles, Anita Butcher and Ann Padley. The Alliance B Team had a fine win over Filton 9-5 with wins from Jenny Merrett, Maureen Charlton, Edwina Willis, Chris Olds and a half from Jan Fukuyama.

The Seniors Bill Freeman Trophy event saw 111 entrants and with the Course in tremendous condition and with the weather kind, scoring was excellent with 25 players scoring par or better. Mike Merrick won Div 1 with 38 after count back from Simon Wynn with Martin Myers 3rd with 37 after count back. Div 2 went to veteran Alan Williams with a fine 42 points with Mike Tout 2nd with 39 and John Treeby 3rd with 38 after count back. Div 3 was won by another veteran Colin Davies with 40, John Broxup was 2nd with 38 after count back from Jim Scott. So the Trophy goes to Alan Williams, well done Alan.

The Seniors Avalon team lost heavily to leaders Cricket St Thomas with just a half coming from Kevin Carmody/Rob Richardson.

The Mixed team had a good win away to Tidworth 4-2 and they experienced the full range of weather from sun to hailstones! Winning for Mendip were Ann & Derek Padley, Jane & Steve Ball, Susan & David Forshaw and Pippa Brown & Clive Copp.

The Juniors team of Junior Captain Connie Cox, Grant Jeffery, Tate Sinfield-Day and Oscar Alexander finished runners up in the Somerset Junior Jamboree held at Burnham with 93 points just 3 behind the home team winners.
