THE final stages of two winter knock-out competitions have provided plenty of drama in the Seniors section at Fosseway Golf Club. Eighteen holes were not enough to settle either the Guerwyn Thomas Trophy or the Winter League final and extra holes were needed to settle the eventual winners.

The Winter League final was a repeat of the 2024 event and for the second year in a row Paul Trigg just had the edge over Cyril Blacker. Having finished all square Blacker looked to have the advantage going back up the first, receiving a shot from his opponent but Trigg’s excellent drive and Blacker’s problem with a tree and bunker proved crucial.

The final of the Guerwyn Thomas Trophy proved equally exciting with two extra holes needed before a definite result was reached in the competition. The pairing of Martyn Cuer and Frank Reeves looked to have the match under control when they led by three holes with just four to play but Shaun Goodwin and Alan Jones hit back strongly and after levelling the contest on the eighteenth green claimed the trophy on the second green.

There was no disputing the winners of the Broadway and Smith Cup with Steve Brixey and Paul Ellis winning the Gruesomes event with a nett score of 75. They finished a clear five shots ahead of Chris Appleton and Alan White with Trigg and Mike Weeks a further shot back. Rob Wells and Noel Chatfield also returned a nett score of 81 but were beaten on countback.

*This year has been difficult out on the course with wet, cold and windy conditions, with golfers having to be at their best. It is not always pleasant to play in such conditions but competitions have taken place despite the bad weather.
