Mendip were up against top of the league Cheddar, who hadn’t dropped a point all season and are certain league winners.
From the off Mendip were pressuring Cheddar who couldn’t quite settle into their usual quick passing. Their tight man marking proved successful and Cheddar began to get frustrated, sending hopeful balls which the defence happily cleared up. Mendip had a fair share of chances, but the fiesty home defence were able to keep us out.
Mendip were the happier at half time - clearly rattling a team so used to controlling the play, so decided to go for more of the same knowing Cheddar would be going all out for the points this second half.
Cheddar did have a bit more about them after the break and were showing to be more of a threat in front of goal, eventually taking the lead through a short corner.
Mendip did not let heads go down and gave it their all to get at least a point from the match that they felt they deserved. Continuing to attack, they were rewarded with their first short corner of the game.
A straight shot from Sally Stanford proved to be the right one when Georgia Price found herself perfectly placed at the right post to guide the ball home. A good goal that was well celebrated!
The last ten minutes were end to end, with Mendip trying to hang onto our point and Cheddar looking for the win. The Mendip defence stepped up and cleared their lines superbly, and goalkeeper Carrie Tiley made some incredible saves throughout the entire match to deny Cheddar.
The final whistle blew with Mendip feeling like they’d won. The only point the league leaders had dropped all season and on their turf too.
Player of the Match was Carrie Tiley for her fab saves keeping us in the match so many times!
