So, with the pressure off, Mendip set about to just enjoy the match, trying to put last week’s performance behind them. For the first quarter of the half, Mendip were the better side and had much of the attacking play. The visitors were restricted to a few breaks and one attack did lead to a penalty flick for a Mendip foot on the line. Mendip’s keeper, Oenone Bodman-Harris, made her presence felt in goal to unsettle her opponent, who then dragged her shot just wide.

This miss seemed to spur on the visitors, who increasingly went on the offensive and managed to score two goals before half-time.

Despite being behind, Mendip continued to battle well. Good work from midfielder, Karen Inns, ensured they remained in contention and she turned provider for Mendip’s goal. Her daughter, Connie Glover, at left wing, showed great anticipation and positional play to connect beautifully with the through ball into the D and then deftly swept past the keeper.

Mendip’s Player of the Match was well deserved by Sarah Whittaker in central defence. Her tackles and timing were second to none, and she halted many a Knowle attacker in their tracks throughout the match.

Knowle did score twice more during the second half, to which Mendip had no reply, but they knew they had worked hard and played their best.

Next week’s final match of the season is in Midsomer Norton, 10.30 a.m. start at Norton Hill School against Jaspers.
