ONE hundred and 20 competed in Mendip Golf Club’s Sims Cup. Div 3 went to Stuart Crane with 72 after countback from William Burns, Paul Taylor and Jonathan Cummings. Div 2 was won by Mike Goodliff with 68 after countback from Alec Roberts and Div 1 was won by Ben Cox with 69, Lee Swain 2nd with 70 and Tom Chapman 3rd with 71 after countback. However the cup went to 20 handicapper Tom Young who overcame a 7 up the 1st to record a net 66. Jack Vowell won the gross prize with 72.  The Avalon A team recorded a 4-1 win over Tall Pines, points coming from Rob Edney/Paul Lewis, Spencer Pocock/Tom Howe, Darrin Vowles/Mark Necker and David Jukes/Baden Wilkinson.This leaves them top of the league..

The Rosebowl team lost 2-3 to Stockwood Vale in the semi finals. Wins for Mendip came from Paul Lewis/David Jukes and Darrin and Jack Vowell.

Mendip’’ Avalon C team completed their fixtures with two away losses to Wheathill 1½-3½, points from Joe Cox and Team Captain Macolm Srawley and a half from Dave Goldie/Tom Black, and to Long Sutton 2-3 a win from from Scott Butland/Gary Quin and halves from Jack Hayes/Tom Black and Jon Cox/Charlie Holmes. These results leave them in a strong position.

The Ladies Pairs Competition was won by Caroline Laws and Lillian Peel with 61 points, well clear of second placed Wendy Collins and Linda Papadopoullos with 55 and Anne Collins and Louise Scott with 54. Aimee Sawyer added to her triumphs this season by winning the Somerset Handicap Championships held at Wedmore, with a gross 78 after count back. In the Stableford Competition Anita Butcher came 4th with 36 points. The Alliance B team suffered a heavy defeat when playing Thornbury.  Ellen Reakes and junior captain Connie Cox won their Bristol & District semi final match at Burnham in the scratch foursomes. They now play their final later in September at Filton. The Mixed Millington Salver was won by Anita and Phil Butcher with an excellent 43 points, Corinne and Danny Durbin were 2nd with 40 after count back from Lee Callow and Jackie Willcox. Now the Stoneham have withdrawn from the annual Tri-Partite match they have been replaced by Newbury & Crookham and it was at that venue that this year’s match took place. The home club came out winners with Mendip and Tidworth close behind.
