WELTON Rovers were beaten 4-0 at home by Brislington in their first home game of the season in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western Football League.

The game attracted a large crowd to West Clewes for this mid-week game - with Brislington deservedly taking the points to become the early leaders of the division on goal difference.

It was a bright summer’s evening as the game got underway as both teams probed early on. A good effort from Owen Humphries saw Alvin Quaye in the Welton goal pull off a good save and minutes later Humphries saw another effort fly over the Welton bar.

As the visitors pressed lively winger Joe McClennen raced down the right, cut in and launched a shot that flew inches wide of Welton’s far post. Welton were also looking good with Omar Simpson and Kyle Tooze causing problems for the Brislington defence.

A misunderstanding in the Welton defence saw a back pass picked up by Welton keeper Quaye and the referee awarded a free kick six yards off the goal line. The Welton defence crowded the goal line and the free kick was cleared away from the goal.

The deadlock was broken on the halfhour  when a good run down the right from fullback Charlies Ames saw him square the ball to Humphries in space in front of goal and he made no mistake as he drilled the ball into the Welton net.

The second half began and Welton found themselves three down after only five minutes into the half. Ash Kington raced down the right flank, found striker Dean Griffiths unmarked in the area and his downward header flew past Quaye into the Welton net.

A couple of minutes later the visitors got a third when Humphries cut through the Welton defence and fired in a cracking shot that gave Quaye no chance.

Welton, to their credit, did not give up and Tooze was very unlucky when he was put through the visitors defence, the keeper raced out to close him down, Tooze lobbed the keeper only to see his goal bound effort veer away from the goal and go wide of the target.

Just before full time the visitors got a fourth when substitute Jordan Scadding drilled his shot into the Welton net to complete a fine all-round performance by the visitors.
