BRISTOL Airport is planning to create a new gate to accommodate more flights simultaneously.

The international airport, located in North Somerset, has submitted a consultation request to North Somerset Council for a plan to create a new gate under permitted development rights.

The airport plans to divide Gate 16 into two gates, with a new staircase and lift, so that it can be used to board two flights at the same time.

A statement submitted by the airport’s planners said: “The creation of an additional gate will help in delivering a seamless customer experience for passengers and airlines by reducing the risk of delay and ensuring on time performance.

“It will also reduce the risk of mis-tracked passengers by maintaining a separation between flights departing simultaneously.”

North Somerset Council had initially refused planning permission for the expansion on environmental grounds only for that decision to be overturned by the planning inspectorate in a costly appeal. 

Campaigners later took the case to the High Court, which also ruled in favour of the airport.
