A brand-new community fund has been set up in Peasedown St John to support a young mum with terminal cancer.
Thirty-year-old community activist, Becci McCafferty, who was told the devastating news before Christmas that she has incurable bowel cancer, has received an overwhelming level of support from villagers since the news became public.
With a twenty-mile charity walk to Cheddar planned for 3rd May, one of the organisers has decided to go one step further and set up a fund to support the McCaffertys and, in the future, other people who may need support.
Village stalwart, Karen Walker, a founder of the Party in the Park festival and Vice- Chairman of the Parish Council, has set up 'Fund for Peasedown'. She commented: "Cancer is a terrifying illness that not only affects those who have it, but their family and friends as well.
"Despite years of research, a universal cure still hasn't been found, so until that time, we must try our best to support those who suffer from cancer and try to ensure their time left living is as comfortable and enjoyable as it can be."
Mrs Walker's parents both died of cancer over ten years ago. She believes that it is during difficult times like this that communities must stick together.
"Peasedown St John is a strong community with a lot going for it. It's because of this that I've set up this new fund, which will help Becci and her family, but go on into the future to support other residents who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness."
Fundraising efforts for Becci have soared in recent weeks. On Thursday, 27th February, publicans, Simon and Meg Sandall, at the Red Post Inn, have dedicated their weekly charity quiz and raffle to the McCaffertys. The event will start at 9 p.m., in the Lounge Bar.
Local Councillor, Nathan Hartley, said: "We are very grateful to Simon and Meg at the Red Post Inn for their kindness and support. I'll be there with the Party in the Park team, attempting to raise as much cash as we can. Anyone is welcome to come along and take part."
A quiz night will also be held at the Prince of Wales Inn next month. This is all in addition to the planned walk to Cheddar on May 3rd, which already has more than fifty people taking part. For more details, contact Adalaide Quill on: 07925 240397.
All funds raised will go to pay for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Disneyland, Florida, for Becci and her family and also contribute towards other things the family may need.
