May is National Walking Month and B&NES Council are highlighting what you can do to help the environment at the same time, like joining the #NoPlaceForLitter movement in Radstock.
Organise a litter pick
B&NES Council are working with #NoPlaceForLitter to provide you with everything you need to organise your own community litter pick.
#NoPlaceForLitter are volunteers working alongside Bath and North East Somerset Council in order to maximise the help and support available to volunteer litter pickers across the area. They are experienced litter pickers and will be happy to help with any questions you have about organising your own event.
What you will need for your litter pick
B&NES Council can provide the following for you:
- Litter pickers (for helping you pick up litter)
- Gloves
- Hi-vis vests
- Bags for the litter
- An information pack for volunteers (including advice on running an event, an example risk assessment, register of volunteers and an agreement form)
Collect your litter pick equipment
Contact one of the following people 2 to 3 weeks before you do your litter pick event so they can prepare the equipment and arrange a suitable time for you to collect it all:
- Erica Davies (Keynsham) - call 0117 90 80 903 or 07713417974, or email [email protected]
- Sally Hedges (Bath) - email [email protected]
- Sean Fletcher (Radstock) - call 07801285113 or email [email protected]
- Lynne Easton (Chew Magna) - email [email protected]
What to look out for when planning a litter pick
Once you've chosen a location, go visit the area in advance and make note of the following things:
- Natural hazards (steep slopes, rivers, presence of animals)
- Hazardous items (sharp objects, needles, batteries, miscellaneous chemicals, asbestos, heavy items)
- Roads (only pick litter in areas with a 30mph limit or less, where there is a pavement or footway you can stick to at all times, and never litter pick on the road or verges)
What to do on the day
When you carry out a litter pick, we suggest you do the following things:
- Bring a first aid kit and anti-bacterial wipes
- Record each volunteer on the register and check them in and out
- Brief the volunteers about potential hazards and what not to touch
- Make sure children stay with a responsible adult
- Leave the bags in the designated area for collection
- Take photos and send them to us if you wish to publicise your event
