MP Dan Norris has welcomed major new funding for upgrades to hospices serving his North East Somerset and Hanham constituency.

A recent announcement allocated £25 million for hospice facility upgrades and refurbishments as part of the biggest investment into hospices in a generation. This includes £297,862 for Dorothy House and £251,252 for St Peter's Hospice.

Dan Norris said: “Hospices serving people across North East Somerset and Hanham welcome this extra capital funding, and they are well-placed to use it wisely to further improve facilities. They do a brilliant job for people with life-limiting conditions, and they provide vital support for their loved ones.”

In a letter to Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Mr Norris writes:

“I look forward to seeing how our local hospices use this additional capital funding, confident that their wise use of the new resources will help them further strengthen their case for greater long-term funding security.

“The assisted dying agenda has of course further drawn attention to the issue of hospice funding, and concerns have been expressed about other financial pressures on hospices serving my constituency and elsewhere.”

“We want a society where every person receives high-quality, compassionate care from diagnosis through to the end of life, so my ongoing representations to the Secretary of State aim to ensure their concerns are rightly highlighted.”

The release of £25 million for upgrades and refurbishments for hospices across England was announced late last month. This immediate funding is to enable hospices to purchase essential new medical equipment, undertake building refurbishments, improve technology, upgrade facilities for patients and families and implement energy efficiency measures.

An additional £75 million will be available from April 2025, and will support more substantial capital projects - including major building works and facility modernisation - throughout the 2025/26 financial year.
