Bath and England rugby centre Ollie Lawrence was the celebrity starter for this year’s Wellow Way 10k, 5k and ramble - an event now firmly established in the village calendar.
This year, 160 children aged between 2 and 12 took part, navigating an obstacle course specially constructed by Sarah Shellard of Wellow Horse Livery. Staff from St Julian’s School took part as colour throwers, adding to the fun and helping create a memorable experience for the young participants.
Meanwhile, nearly 200 participants preparing for the 5k and 10k runs gathered for a group warm-up session led by Sam Eyles of South West Fitness. His energetic guidance helped set the tone for the main events, ensuring runners were well-prepared and motivated before setting off across the Wellow countryside.
Chair of the organising committee, Lisa Hunt, said: “5K entries were up this year as parents of young colour runners decided to give the 5k a go, many running with their children.
“We heard stories of families training together, others upgrading from 5k to 10k and of people feeling inspired to start running with a goal to participating next year. It was brilliant to see families getting active together which is what it’s all about.”
Participants and spectators could refuel with a BBQ by the Fox and Badger while tea/coffee/cakes provided by St Julian’s PTA raised £1,300 for the school. Overall, the day raised approximately £3,000 for the village’s good causes – St Julian’s Church, Wellow Recreation Ground and play park and the Parlour Shop.
Lisa added: “With a core organising committee of twelve and thirty five volunteers on the day it really did bring the village together.”
