Some time ago, The Journal’s very own film columnist and Somer Valley FM’s resident movie buff, Jamie Skinner, reviewed the 2021 French horror-drama film Titane for our ‘Film of the Week’ column. Since its release, Jamie has hoped to entice fellow radio presenter Seb Bailey to watch the feature film he rated four stars. That time has finally been scheduled, and the pair have booked out the former Bristol IMAX at Bristol Aquarium for the occasion.

Following the screening, Seb and Jamie will host a live conversation about the events that have unravelled before them.

“It came out in December 2021, but I saw it in October at the London Film Festival. Prior to watching, I’d seen a lot of talk online about how it was quite a messed up film. It was a little freaky, I’ll admit, and this is one of the reasons I’m keen to get Seb to watch it”, explains Jamie of Titane.

“When I first pitched the film to him, I asked ‘how squeamish are you?’ And it all spiralled from there really. But it is a very good film, I very much enjoyed it. I’ve partly chosen to screen it for that reason - it’ll look great on the Bristol IMAX - but largely because I feel like Seb’s reaction to it will be very funny”.

For two and a half years, Jamie has been badgering Seb for this to happen. It’s been quite the build-up, and anyone who may be into the idea of a psychological drama on a Sunday afternoon is invited to come along. For those who do attend, there will be potential prizes up for grabs, too.

“Titane was exclusively streaming on MUBI, so I contacted them, told them of our plans to show the film and asked them if they had any prizes we could give away. They’ve kindly provided a free three-month subscription and hopefully will be bringing along a couple of bundles of MUBI titles on Blu-Ray to give away as well”.

The IMAX is the biggest screen in the South West and was brought back last year for the Forbidden Worlds Film Festival.

“I chose it because it seemed like a very nice place to put on a screening for one-off special event. The auditorium is great for our conversation following the film too, plus the size of the screen and space is brilliant”, says Jamie of the location.

The post-screening chat is likely to be twenty minutes or so of discussion surrounding the film, plus the regular, off-topic-yet-hilarious tangents that usually crop up on their respective radio shows.

Seats for the screening, which will be held on Sunday, 9th July at 3:30pm at the former Bristol IMAX in Bristol Aquarium, are available to purchase now, and include access to the follow-up conversation.

Jamie urges people to come along and enjoy the movie, ending on the note: “Titane is a brilliant film, it’s not just about the body horror, it explores themes of gender identity sexuality, who we really are; it deals with things like toxic masculinity... There’s some wonderful stuff that’s wound in to all”.

Titane is rated 18; anyone attending who may look under 21 may be asked for ID.
