A sponsored step challenge which raises vital funds for leading charity Diabetes UK returns this summer – and a call has gone out for people from Somerset to sign up.

The One Million Step Challenge, sponsored by Fitbit, runs between 1 July and 30 September and tasks participants with completing a massive one million steps over three months – around 10,000 a day. Participants can take on the challenge from their own doorstep, at their own pace.

All funds raised will go towards Diabetes UK’s work funding life-saving research and ensuring everyone living with diabetes gets the care and support they need.

Actor and Diabetes UK supporter Nina Wadia OBE, whose credits include EastEndersCitizen Khan, Strictly Come Dancing and The Outlaws, is encouraging people to take part in the challenge.

Nina said: “It’s always good to get moving, whether that’s a quick walk, or a whizz around the dancefloor. I’m supporting Diabetes UK’s One Million Step Challenge, as it encourages us to do just that. You can get more active and feel great, while raising money for a fantastic cause - one very close to my heart.

“The challenge is for every body, and everybody. So this summer, join thousands of others in taking one million steps over three months. Steps for your body, and steps for everybody affected by diabetes.”

The Diabetes UK challenge is also being supported by Lavina Metha MBE, a fitness and motivational expert and content creator. She said: “I'm always saying ‘moving is always a good idea’. So this summer, sign up to the One Million Step Challenge.

“10,000 steps a day over 3 months. It’s small steps at first, but before you know it, you’ve reached a million – and in the process, you’ve fundraised for Diabetes UK. So sign up today, and keep moving.”

Phaedra Perry, Head of Diabetes UK – south west and south central, added: “Walking is a fantastic way to help you get fit and by taking on the One Million Step Challenge, you’ll not only be stepping towards a healthier you. The money you raise will help fund our vital work, including the development of life-changing treatments and raising awareness of type 2 diabetes and how to manage it by making healthier choices day-to-day.

“So, please, step forward and sign up to the One Million Step Challenge for Diabetes UK.”

People taking part can take part anywhere from their local park to their living room, alone or with family, friends, or colleagues.

In addition to the standard One Million Step Challenge, there are two other challenges to choose from, Participants can do the 500,000 step challenge - about 5,400 steps a day and a perfect start to your stepping journey. More experienced walkers may want to take on the 1,700,000 step challenge, around 18,400 steps a day and the equivalent of walking from Lands End to John O’Groats.

There are some amazing rewards on offer for challengers, including exclusive Fitbit discounts, three unique distance medals and a One Million Step Challenge reusable water bottle for anyone who fundraises over £250.
