For some years now, the ever popular Ronald Hutton has been one of the guest speakers at the meetings of the Harptrees History Society. He is making a welcome return visit in October to continue his series of talks on Tudor and Stuart monarchs.

James VI of Scotland and 1 of England has always been a curiously dual personality. As King of Scots, he was one of the finest ever to rule, a canny leader who stabilised his nation after civil war and reformation. As King of England, he was a buffoon, an ungainly, ridiculous and maladroit figure who destablised relations with Parliament. Is it possible to reconcile the two? Professor Hutton will attempt to do so!

Professor Hutton is an engaging speaker, seen on our television screens contributing to historical documentaries, and a leading authority on the history of the British Isles in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
