Longvernal Primary School in Midsomer Norton is celebrating a successful STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) Week, which featured a range of activities and experiments.
Pupils at the school also enjoyed visits from experts in the various fields which helped engage them in “exploration and discovery.”
Pupils took part in hands-on experiments, problem-solving tasks, and interactive workshops designed to enhance their understanding of STEM subjects.
They also welcomed a series of guest speakers, including a veterinary nurse who explained her profession and how STEM is involved, a mechanic who showcased his ‘beautifully’ restored vintage Chevrolet, and a representative from the National Grid’s outreach and education programme.
These visits provided valuable insight into the real-world applications of STEM and inspired many students to consider future careers in these fields.
The highlight of the week was the Science Fair and Oracy Showcase, held in the school hall. Each class presented their experiments to an audience of teachers, fellow pupils, and visitors.
Projects ranged from investigating forces and motion to exploring chemical reactions, with students explaining their findings confidently and clearly.
STEM Week was also an opportunity to develop pupils’ communication skills, as explaining their scientific work helped to build confidence in public speaking. Teachers praised the students’ enthusiasm and ability to articulate their discoveries.
Longvernal Primary School continues to support the development of STEM subjects and oracy, encouraging students to engage with these areas and build essential skills for the future. Through a range of activities and events, the school aims to inspire students to explore fields such as engineering, science, and technology.
Plans are in place to continue these initiatives with another STEM Week next year.
