AS the festive season draws near residents and businesses gathered on Midsomer Norton's High Street to celebrate the annual Christmas Light switch-on event.

On a cold evening, the town centre came alive with festive cheer as crowds gathered across the marketplace to enjoy mulled cider, sweets, and warm doughnuts, all to the tune of a brass band playing Christmas classics, on Thursday, November 28,

The event delivered on its promise of an evening filled with entertainment, food, and seasonal activities.

The event, organised by Midsomer Norton Town Council, saw local artists perform at the event with music and carol singing, while stalls provided festive treats and handcrafted gifts.

Children had the opportunity to visit Santa’s Grotto, and a range of family-friendly activities were available.

Local MP Anna Sabine also attended the event and said “this is the first time I’ve done this” ahead of switching the Christmas Tree lights on.

She addressed the crowds before asking for assistance from children to help her count down from 10 before pressing a plunger, setting off a flash of green and red confetti into the night sky and illuminating the tree to officially start Christmas celebrations in the town.

Joined by Mayor Martyn Plant and Leader of BANES council Kevin Guy, Anna said: “I’m delighted to be here among the music, aromas and crafts to help kick start Christmas celebrations here in Midsomer Norton.

“It’s my first time doing this sort of thing and was so much fun, I hope everyone will come and experience the tree and enjoying the small businesses on offer for Christmas shopping.”

The market will be held in the garden of The Somer Centre, which will be fully covered and heated throughout the day. The event is open to all, and organisers are looking forward to welcoming the community to celebrate the season.
