Can you identify the location in this week’s Mystery Photograph?
Each week, we challenge you, our readers, to test your knowledge of the area with a picture of a local landmark from bygone days.
Last week’s Mystery Photograph did not provoke any many many guesses as some others have, but the correct answer was Westfield Post Office.
Westfield’s history is deeply rooted in Somerset’s coal mining heritage. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was part of the Somerset Coalfield, which was a major source of employment and growth in the area.
The Somerset coal mining industry brought workers and their families to Westfield and nearby Radstock, creating a strong working-class community with a resilient, collaborative spirit.
Coal mines such as Norton Hill Colliery were central to Westfield's development until the decline of coal mining in the 20th century, leading to the eventual closure of the mines. The remnants of this mining heritage are still present in the area through old mining structures and the cultural identity of Westfield and its neighbouring towns.
After the coal mines closed, Westfield transitioned into a more residential community, with new housing developments supporting families from Radstock, Midsomer Norton, and beyond. While mining is no longer an active industry, the legacy of those times remains a point of pride and connection for Westfield’s residents.
Westfield, along with neighbouring Radstock and Midsomer Norton, also saw investments in community facilities and infrastructure to support its growing population. Local councils have worked to keep Westfield’s history alive through heritage projects, with organisations like the Somerset Coalfield Life Museum in Radstock preserving and displaying artefacts from the coal mining era.
Congratulations to everyone who correctly identified Westfield, and more specifically the Post Office in last week’s Mystery Photograph. Thank you for all the great guesses and ideas shared with us.
Each guess adds interest, and it’s always encouraging to see the community actively participate in solving these local mysteries together.
