CAN you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?
Each week, the Journal challenges its readers to test their local knowledge by identifying a historic location from days gone by in the area.
Last week’s picture was taken at Clare Hall, Ston Easton. Congratulations to Paul Hancock who correctly identified the location.
Ston Easton is a village in Somerset, within the Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES) district, approximately 6 miles south of the city of Bath. The village lies on the edge of the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside.
One of the most prominent features of the village is Ston Easton Park, a Grade I listed Georgian mansion set within extensive grounds. The park, now a hotel, was once part of a larger estate, reflecting the village's historical ties to the aristocracy. The Ston Easton Church (St. Mary’s Church) is another significant landmark, with its history dating back several centuries.
Ston Easton’s rural environment, with its blend of historical architecture and natural beauty, makes it a quiet and attractive place. While the village is relatively small, its proximity to both Bath and other surrounding villages offers easy access to broader services and amenities.
It is also a short distance from Priddy, a village known for its caves and historic landmarks, contributing to the area’s appeal to both residents and visitors.
The village and surrounding area are home to various walking routes, allowing visitors to explore the Mendip Hills, and is well-served by road connections for easy access to larger towns.
Its proximity to Bath allows for a balance of peaceful rural life while maintaining easy access to the cultural, historical, and social opportunities of the city.
The Journal, in partnership with Radstock Museum, thanks readers for their enthusiasm for the Mystery Photograph feature. We can't wait to share the next challenge and see who can correctly guess where the picture was taken.
