Now we have said goodbye to what always seems to be the marathon month of January, we can have our sights set on the Spring – to help you get there Reel People Films have three great films left in their current season on the Big Screen at Kilmersdon Village Hall.
First up at 8pm on Friday, 9th February, they have a beautiful adaptation of Claire Keegan’s novel ‘Foster’ in The Quiet Girl (Cert 12, 1hr 31mins, subtitled). At the centre of this gem of a film is the 9 year old, Cait who is one of an ever growing household of ‘overlooked’ children living on a shambolic smallholding in Rural Ireland . When her mother becomes pregnant again she is packed off to spend the summer with distant relatives at their farm where she experiences a new way of living.
Claire Keegan’s novels have been universally acclaimed for their emotional depth and the wonderful economy of her writing. The film’s director, Colm Bairead, in his first feature, is masterful at capturing that economy with his wonderful cast – not wasting a frame or a word of dialogue in the process of creating this jewel of a film. Dubbed ‘An instant classic’ by The Guardian – it sounds like this film should not be missed!
The film group have also confirmed the film to close their season on Friday, 12th April 2024 as One Life (Cert 12A, 1hr 49mins). This is the remarkable story of the humanitarian, Nicholas Winton who helped hundreds of children escape German–occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of World War II. A poignant and emotional film brought to life by a tremendous cast headed by Anthony Hopkins with Helena Bonham-Carter and Johnny Flynn.
As always, everyone is welcome at Reel People Films – all screenings are at 8pm but the doors and bar open at 7.15pm for a drink and chat before the film.
You can go along as a guest or join as a member for the rest of the season – the committee guarantee you a warm and friendly welcome. Both cash and cards are accepted.
