A group of local rail enthusiasts will be holding a public meeting next month to explain plans to rebuild Chilcompton station. ‘The Somerset and Dorset Railway – Chilcompton Station Project’ wish to restore the station to its former glory.

The Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway opened on 20th July, 1874. Originally, the station consisted of a single platform and a station building, followed by a loop and second platform that were opened on the Up side in 1876. The line to Binegar was doubled in 1885, and in 1886, the line to Midsomer Norton and Radstock followed suit.

The station closed to goods in 1964, and passenger services were withdrawn when the SDJR closed on 7th March, 1966.

Chilcompton Parish Council are very keen to clarify the proposed plans and the subsequent impact they may have on the surrounding area. They have therefore arranged for a public meeting to be held on this matter, and arranged for one of the group’s members to come along to speak and answer questions. It is to be held at Chilcompton Village Hall on Tuesday, 4th September at 7.30 p.m. The meeting is open to the general public and local residents are encouraged to come along.
