Seedy Saturday returns to Timsbury’s Conygre Hall on March 8 offering a lively and hands-on event for growers of all ages and experience levels.
Running from 10am to 2pm, this annual seed and spud spectacular provides a chance to swap seeds, pick up gardening tips, explore local products, and connect with the community.
The seed swap encourages visitors to bring some of their home-grown seeds and leave them for others to browse while taking something new home to try.
This often includes heritage varieties that haven’t been in commercial production for years, such as Veitch’s Pea, or localised varieties developed through the selection of seed over many years to produce a truly unique variety like the Farmborough Bean.
Now in its 15th year, this community event has stalls selling seeds and potatoes alongside spring bulbs, fruit bushes and trees, cottage perennials, herbs, plus homemade produce, local crafts, plant-based products and gifts.
There will also be expert talks and advice about garden herbs, local wildlife, seed saving and composting, demonstrations, a kids’ craft zone, and the kitchen café providing refreshments and delicious homemade treats.
Event organiser Sam Ross said: “This event marks the start of the growing season for seed swappers, amateur gardeners, allotment-holders, horticulturalists, and anyone passionate about nature and the environment.
“The friendly, local and sustainable ethos encourages everyone to have fun growing plants, alongside saving and sharing seeds and stories with friends and neighbours.”
Seedy Saturday is run by a small group of local and dedicated volunteers and is sponsored by Pennard Plants and Beans and Herbs. Entry to Seedy Saturday is just £2, with children under 16 free.
Those without seeds to swap can still participate by making a small donation. A variety of stalls will be selling potatoes, onions, shallots, garlic, heritage and organic seeds, and plants, with vendors including Beans and Herbs and Pennard Plants.
Additional stalls will offer handmade preserves, local produce, gardening equipment, plants, crafts, and gifts, featuring businesses such as Hives and Herbals, Kate Westcott Designs, Malago Medicinals, Natty Deco, One Oil, Orchids by Celia, Sam’s Jams, Teresa the Card Lady, Timmy’s Chillies, and Weleda Wellbeing Advisor Stef Mills. Barty’s Trading Co. may also attend (to be confirmed).
Free talks by expert growers will take place throughout the day (schedule to be confirmed), alongside family-friendly activities and displays. The event will also serve as a hub for sharing practical advice on gardening and sustainable growing.
Community groups such as Avon Wildlife Trust, Grow Timsbury, Rockaway Park, the RSPB, and the National Garden Scheme (NGS) will provide information on horticulture, wildlife conservation, and sustainable lifestyles.
Refreshments will be available from The Kitchen Café, which will be serving tea, coffee, soft drinks, bacon rolls, and homemade cake.
The venue is wheelchair accessible, and parking is available for up to 55 cars, including two designated spaces for disabled visitors. Additional on-road parking can be found within the village.
