Westfield Parish Council held its ever popular Christmas lights switch on event on Thursday, 24th November, bringing everyone full of cheer into the festive period.
After a very blustery, stormy day the skies cleared and winds dropped just in time for a record crowd to enjoy the festivities.
Father Christmas was on hand to offer the children a small gift and hear what they were hoping to receive for Christmas. The Radstock and Midsomer Norton Silver Band ably accompanied Westfield Voices with the carols, which were also sung by the whole crowd – and what a lovely sound that was. Westfield Primary School choir entertained us with renditions of Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus is coming to Town.
This year we were delighted to present certificates to those groups in Westfield in Bloom that had taken part in the Britain in Bloom competition earlier in the year and received awards. Awards were given to Westfield Allotments and Gardening Group for both allotment sites in Westfield, Westfield Primary School, Fosse Way School, which was a first entry, and Swallow.
The Rev’d Ian Rousell of St Peter’s Church gave a thoughtful talk about things to ponder over the festive period. We are very grateful to him for that – at this time of year we do need to think about the reasons we celebrate Christmas.
The lights were excellently switched on by Maisie of Westfield Brownies and Freya of Westfield Rainbows (pictured right).
There are so many people to thank for helping to create the event and for taking part – all those previously mentioned, along with Strode Sounds for ensuring those that needed to be heard were, in fact, heard beautifully and AF Denning Electricals for making sure the lights came on! Jesters Carnival Club did a great job of marshalling and making sure everyone was safe and away from the roads.
The Christmas display will be there for all to enjoy throughout the season.
