On April 14, 2024, Writhlington Action Group hosted its annual Big Spring Clean event, attracting community members eager to help keep the place they call home clean. Avon Wildlife Trust joined the event this time; they are working in the area as part of The Nextdoor Nature project and are keen to work with local people on improving Writhlington for people and wildlife.
The event, which took place in Writhlington, saw volunteers of all ages come together to tackle litter, eat homemade cake, plant edible herb seeds, create wildlife crafts and connect with other local families. Writhlington Action Group member Claire said: “This event is all about coming together to make our area pleasant to live in and show future generations that we can take action. We don’t want our wildlife to disappear.”
As part of Avon Wildlife Trust's ongoing Nextdoor Nature project, the event provided a space for residents to talk about nature whilst actively participating in conservation efforts.
"Where’s all the nature gone?" asked local resident Hector. "We used to have slow worms, frogs and hundreds of bats in Writhlington when I was a kid." Avon Wildlife Trust is eager to listen to local people about how they feel about where they live and empower the community to take ownership of their natural surroundings. They can also work towards creating habitats that will help wildlife thrive and give their children somewhere to play outdoors safely.
“It’s fun to hear about the wildlife people have seen in Writhlington. Red kites, hedgehogs, badgers, and deer are all regularly seen by residents.” Said Stephanie Sharkey, Nextdoor Nature Engagement Officer.
“Events like these are fantastic because they connect people and inspire a feeling of community. We keep hearing that families feel disconnected from their neighbours and need more activities for children. That’s why we are planning more family events in May half-term.”
The Avon Wildlife Trust say that the success of the Big Spring Clean event is encouraging because it shows communities are keen to drive positive change at the local level. By harnessing the collective energy and enthusiasm of community members, everyone can pave the way for a more sustainable future - one litter pick and seed planting at a time.
