What a month August is turning out to be for Purnell Bowls Club! It started on the first of the month at Ashcombe, when Sam and Cameron played in the Semi-Final of the junior pairs, only to lose to a very talented pair from Watchet.
On the same day, Maureen, Carole, Jane and Ailsa won the Semi-Final of the Ladies’ Senior Fours, only to lose by one shot in the final which was held at Chew Stoke and Tim Towells was also unfortunate to lose the Two Wood competition by one shot on an extra end.
Our Ladies had a good win against Prattens in the Quarter-Final of the Fear Cup and now play Ashcombe in the Semi-Final, to be held at Clevedon Prom this coming Saturday. Good Luck, Ladies! Our Men, not to be outdone, reached the Semis of the Wedmore Plate, only to lose to a very strong Taunton team.
When we entered the Tony Allcock mixed Fours back in February, it was beyond our wildest dreams to think we would reach this stage of the National Competition. We have played and won against Bath, RBL, Congresbury, St Andrew’s and Ilminster, to reach the Inter County stage of the competition, where we played the Dorset winners and won 41–16. We now play St Austell, Cornwall, on a neutral green to be held at Crediton on 2nd September. This means we have reached the last sixteen clubs in the country – what an achievement! The winners will go on to the National Finals at Leamington Spa, where the competition is played to a conclusion.
Our Youth Section continues to flourish with Sam, Cam, Grace, and Chloe all playing and winning for Somerset’s Under-25s at Wedmore last Sunday.
The Outdoor Season is drawing to a close and we will now be looking to the Indoor Season. Anyone who would like to try their hand at Indoor bowls or enter a team, please get in touch with John Hansford: 01761 415957 or Don Dart: 01761 471019.
