After beating Bath in two competitions this year, number three was just beyond the Purnell A Bowls team. It was probably their poorest performance of the season in the Quarter-Final of the Somerset Turnball Cup last Tuesday – they lost on three rinks, drawing on one.
It was another nail-biting finish for the large crowd on Wednesday night at the Semi-Final of the Mid-Somerset Cup, when Wyrrall Park Glastonbury were the visitors to Bristol Road, Paulton. The rain came down from the start to the finish of the match, which ended all square – so all the rinks had to play an extra end, with the Purnell lads winning 7–1. They now play local rivals, Norwest, this Wednesday at home in the Final, who had a terrific win away to Bath by just two shots. There are only a few Purnell members who can remember the last time they were in the Final of the Mid-Somerset Cup, nearing thirty years ago.
Last Saturday, the B team travelled to Keynsham B and came away with just two points after a poor display; the C team, who are having their best season ever, won 10–2 at home to Stotherts B.
The A team have four games to play and are lying just two points behind the league title contenders, Ilminster, the other being Bath, who are just two points behind Purnell. They have a big game at home this Saturday against Taunton; if they win this one, who knows what they can achieve.
