In the National ‘Top Club’ Competition the Men of Purnell Bowls Club progressed to the next round with a fine narrow 3-2 win over Chew Stoke BC, but their successful run came to an end when they were beaten 1–4 by fancied Watchet, although the score did not reflect on some very close games in the various disciplines.
In the Mid-Somerset League, the Men completed an unbeaten run for the season, with fine wins over Frome Selwood, Norwest and Paulton and qualify for the semi-final against Weston Bath.
In the County Turnbull Cup, further success against Prattens means a quarter-final match against Bath.
Meanwhile, in the Somerset County League, all three teams have found the going difficult. The A team lost games against Bristol and Watchet and the B team lost to Imperial and Knowle, whilst the C team had a fine 12-0 win over Bloomfield, but lost their last game against Fosseway, in a surprisingly rain-affected match.
The Ladies took part in the second round of the Somerset County Ladies interclub competitition ‘The Fear Cup’, with a trip to Bath, and came off second best, losing by 13 shots. Meanwhile, there were three fine league wins. Firstly, against Prattens by 12 points, thus turning around an earlier 12 point defeat, and then against Frome Selwood and Fosseway.
With Friday evenings continuing this week with another round of club triples league, as well as being the club’s social evening, we do welcome anyone interested in taking up this popular sport, so please come along where you will be made most welcome or visit the club’s website, www.purnellbowls.co.uk or contact club secretary Jan Dart 01761 471019 for more information.
