IN THE final afternoon of this year’s spring Beginner’s Course, several newcomers to the fascinating game of croquet enjoyed a relaxing Sunday afternoon meeting and playing a game with more established members of Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club.
Every spring the club runs a beginners course consisting of afternoons of skills and tactics training from fully qualified coaches. The nominal fee for this course is then deducted from the annual membership fee if the new player decides to join the club. Membership gives access to the club’s four full-sized croquet lawns and to their new Club House for 12 months of both summer and winter play.
Roll-up club sessions are for Golf Croquet, both singles and doubles, on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays and for Association Croquet on Wednesday mornings.
League matches are played against other local clubs in the South West Federation of Croquet Clubs. In the Handicapped Leagues novice players receive advantages in the form of ‘free’ hoops when playing against more experienced players.
Members of CPCC also enjoy regular social events; quiz evenings, barbeques and the like throughout the year.
In the Beginners Course the new players were taught the basic shots of croquet and even on their first afternoon they had mastered these skills sufficiently well to play a game of Golf Croquet.
Camerton and Peasedown CC also invite potential players to come for a ‘Drop-In’ session on a Sunday afternoon. These are scheduled for the first Sunday afternoon in every month; upcoming is the one for Sunday, May 4th. Just go along at 2.00pm wearing flat soled shoes; the club will provide all the other equipment. These Drop-In taster afternoons are free. The club is situated in Whitebrook Lane in Peasedown, BA2 8LD.
Details of club membership and a full calendar of events can be found on the club’s website www.camertonpeasedowncroquet.co.uk .
