CAMERTON and Peasedown Croquet Club held a fund-raising event in aid of the British Heart Foundation. They played a unique variant of the game of croquet called ‘One-Ball’.
The fund-raiser was part of the National Charity One-Ball event; the winners, at Club level, progress to the national finals which will be held at Surbiton on Sunday, May 5. This year’s chosen charity was The British Heart Foundation and in their honour all the competitors wore something red.
In One-Ball Croquet each player has just one ball and is challenged to score hoops against one other player using a variety of different strokes. It is similar to Association Croquet but because it is played with only one ball, instead of the usual two, it has similarities with Golf Croquet; individual handicaps are adjusted for the One-Ball format.
The 12 competitors were divided into two groups of six for the round-robin games; the two top players of each group progressing to a semi- final round.
The lead players in Group 1 were Ann Munton and Simon Dunk and in Group two they were Jonathon Flatt and Nigel Wulko. It is worth telling that Simon Dunk has not been playing croquet very long and Jonathon Flatt only started to play in 2023. Neither had played in the One-Ball format before.
In the semi- finals Ann played Nigel and Simon played Jonathon. In the final round Simon beat Ann to become the winner; in the third place playoff Nigel beat Jonathon.
The games were great fun, all played in a light-hearted way and CPCC raised £175 for The British Heart Foundation.
It is well known that spending time in the company of friends, in the fresh air and doing some gentle exercise is excellent for your health and well-being.
The CPCC club members plan several more social and sporting events for the summer season. Membership details can be found on the Club website where you will also find details of their taster sessions and open days. https://camertonpeasedowncroquet.co.uk/
