DESPITE the rain and windy conditions, four Pro Shop Stableford events have been staged at Mendip Golf Club.
Seventy-three played in the first event won by William Burns with 42 points after count back from young Georgie Powell, with Shaun Rich third with 41 on count back from Paul Godwin and Nigel Pidgeon.
The next event was won by Simon Jefferies with 39 after count back from Clayton Merrett with Sienna Elliott third with 38 and Alexander Gay was fourth with 36.
The third event was won by Victoria Hicks with 40, Sean Thatcher was second with 39, Georgie Powell was third with 37 and Alan Kay was 4th with 36 after a 4 way tie.
Then last week saw an incredible 60 ladies play in a nine-hole qualifying event. The Ladies Section have certainly seen a healthy intake of new members who have already started to integrate successfully.
Division One went to Jan Fukuyama with 19 points, new member Fiona Hassard was second with 18 points after count back from Fran Davies and Jenny Merrett. Division Two was won by Sue Needham with 17, Allison Rumming was second with 15 after count back from Susan Forshaw (new member) and Andrea Williams. Division Three went to Pauline Williams with a fine 21 points, Debbie Godwin was second with 20 and Caroline Simper was third with 18 points.
A well attended Seniors Dinner saw the annual presentation of all the Seniors Trophies won in 2023 and there was only one prize winner not in attendance, an excellent turnout.
The evening ran very smoothly thanks to the Master of Ceremonies Tony Scot, while Seniors Captain Robert Miller gave a fine summing up of his year which has been so successful, albeit with one of the worst years on record for the weather.
He reported that the Seniors Section now numbers 215. Mendip reached the Semi Final of the Somerset Scratch Cup under the able captaincy of Martin Myers who is now stepping down after leading the Team for six years. Mendip under the captaincy of Steve Davis also reached the Semi Final of the Seniors Somerset Rose Bowl losing to the eventual winners Burnham and Berrow.
This has certainly been a fine year for the Seniors at the Mendip club. Wet and wind has not kept them off the course when play has been possible.
