With the continuing wet weather causing most golf courses to remain closed for an unprecedented number of days over the past two weeks, results are rather thin on the ground.
It is no consolation to Mendip’s members but the closures have been widespread throughout the country. A recent National Greenkeepers article that has been sent out to clubs highlights the increasing problem year on year painting a concerning picture going forward unless recent trends reverse.
At Mendip, whilst the course remains so wet, we are just so much better off than the majority of other clubs when it comes to recovery times. Just a couple of days without rain and we are back playing - it’s just waiting for those dry days to come!
The weekend of the 10th/11th saw eighty eight players in the Pro Shop 4-person Bowmaker. The winners were an all ladies team of Susy Rudkin, Lyn Jones, Julie Doyle and Victoria Ham who scored 90 points.
In second place came Tim Crew, Baden Wilkinson, Andrew Burr and Ham Ridene with 88 after count back from Spencer Pocock, Luke Weatherall, Ashley Swain and Thomas Webb.
The following weekend saw a small number of competitors in the Pro Shop singles event. This was won by Jon Cox with 40 points, Danny Rugg was second with 39, Ross Keyworth was third with 38 and William Burns was fourth with 37 after count back from Paul Lewis.
On Tuesday 20th, the Ladies enjoyed a rare dry day and forty one competed in a 9 hole non qualifying Stableford. Division One went to Jean Padfield with 16 after count back from Jenny Merrett with Lynn Cox third with 15. Division Two was won by Karen Cookson with 16, Allison Rumming was second with 14 after count back from Julia Phillips and Corrina Bates and Division 3 went to Annette Jobbins with 18, Sally Humphries was second with 17 and Wendy Collins was third with 16.
The Pro Shop Nearest the Pin went to Nick White with Craig Robertson second.
