MENDIP Golf Club men’s Avalon A team visited Minehead for their final fixture needing a win to secure promotion and this they achieved 3-2 - an excellent result on a course that usually favours the home team.

Points came from team captain Phil Leadbeater playing with Mendip’s men’s captain Mark Necker, Paul Lewis and the ever reliable David Jukes and Tom Chapman playing with Jeremy Cooke. They not only achieved promotion but as champions..

The Pro Shop Stableford saw wins in the Ladies Section for Anita Butcher with 34 beating Hayley Bullock on count back and in the mens for Tom Cook with 41, Darren Phelps was 2nd with 39, Ben Roberts was 3rd with 38 and Tommy Beveridge was 4th with 37 after count back. Ben also won nearest the pin.

The Ladies Qualifying Stableford saw a win in Div 1 for Lynne Vowles with 37, Edwina Willis was 2nd with 35 after count back from Jenny Merrett. Diane Stanton won Div 2 with 36, Helen Roberts was 2nd with 35 and Margaret Allen was 3rd with 34 and Div 3 went to Isobel Panton with 36 after count back from Sally Humphries with Caroline Laws 3rd with 34.

The Ladies Alliance A team sealed pomotion to Division 2 with two crushing wins 14-0 against The Bristol and The Kendleshire. Never has the section been stronger and when they are able to field their strongest 7 they are a formidable team. Wins in both matches came from Ellen Reakes (handicap +1), Aimee Sawyer (Scratch), Libby Dezis (4), Connie Cox (7), Jinhee Page (14) and Team Captain Marian Speed (13) and in the first match Evie Thatcher (13) and in the second match Lena Warren (15). Well done Ladies, let’s hope we can keep the squad together next season.

The Ladies friendly team beat Wheathill 4-1 with wins from Louise Scott/Debbie Godwin, Wendy Collins/Jenny Howarth, Pippa Brown/Suzie Howe and Gina Howard/Jane Richardson.

The Alliance B team completed their fixtures with a halved match against Wedmore with wins from Lynne Vowles, Jane Ball, Pauline Young and with a half from Lally Gibson.

The Ladies 9 hole qualifier was won by Elaine Richardson with 20 with Joan Clark 2nd with 18 after count back from Bridget Rylance.

The Seniors visited Kingsdown and came away with a 4-2 win. Successful for Mendip were Paul Godwin/Tony Taylor, Paul Wood/Tony Scott, Steve Ledger/Alan Edwards and Andy Griffiths/Martin Sutherland.
