MENDIP LADIES 2nds 1 YEOVIL & SHERBORNE 4

Mendip Seconds put in an excellent first-half display against one of the Wessex First Division’s fancied front-runners on Saturday, but tired in the second half, as Yeovil ran out comfortable winners.

The first half saw Mendip working hard to build phases of passing play, with wide backs, Olivia Collins and Katie Browning, setting the pace. Strong running up front from Connie Glover and Eva Holliwell ensured that the Yeovil defence was kept busy throughout the half, while centre-back, Sarah Whittaker, and goalkeeper, Carrie Tiley, were alert to the counter-attacking threat.

Following a period of exciting end-to-end play, Yeovil scored from a well-executed near-post drive and cross with just seconds of the first half remaining.

Mendip went into the second half full of optimism, but Yeovil were fastest out of the blocks. A flurry of three goals from the visitors, each one coming from an overlap as Yeovil poured players forward, all but put the game to bed.

Holliwell showed great determination to pull one back for Mendip late on, driving from outside the 23’ and unleashing a shot from the edge of the D, but time ran out on an unlikely comeback.

The Player of the Match award was shared by Collins and Tiley. This Saturday, Mendip face a tough away fixture at Shepton Mallet at 11.30 a.m.
