The biggest game in the club's history at Watchet last Friday evening in the County Final of the National Two Rink competition proved to be a step too far for the Purnell eight.
Playing in torrential rain, thunder and lightning, the seasiders proved too strong for the Purnell lads and they lost by fifteen on one rink and won by one on the other, losing by fourteen overall.
What a journey this has been in this competition for the village team, beating the likes of Clevedon and Bristol away in earlier rounds – this made it doubly disappointing to lose out in the final.
After losing last week in the league to Banwell, the A team was looking to bounce back and bounce back they did in style, beating local rivals, Bloomfield, and winning on all rinks. Giving a 12–0 result on points, this win moves them into the dizzy heights of third place in the Premier Division. They needed this win to maintain their league status, as they have a difficult game away this week at top club, Bath.
The B team had a great win away to Frome Selwood, again winning on all rinks with another 12–0 victory and to round a great Saturday off, the C team recorded their first win of the season at Norwest B, winning well on just one rink with a points victory of 8–4.
The Mid-Somerset Mixed Team continue to do well, maintaining their 100% record in the league by beating Norwest again last Friday evening.
Purnell Ladies last week continue to impress with good wins against Bloomfield and Norwest and will be looking to keep amongst the front runners in the Wild League over the next few weeks.
This coming Thursday sees the start of the Men's floodlit competition, this year being sponsored by Hartwells of Bath. The club is very grateful for the interest and support of the local Citroën garage.
Last Sunday, fifty members travelled to Exmouth for a friendly game against the Madeira Club, again, as other years, well organised by Alan and Jan Palmer. At the conclusion of the game, the home club put on a tremendous meal. The day was a great success, as always, and Purnell won by seven shots, which made the journey home more pleasurable.
