CLEVEDON Town gained a fine 4-3 away victory over Barnstaple Town in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western Football League over the weekend.

It enabled them to top the table on goal difference from Street who went down to a surprise 2-0 home defeat against Brixham AFC.

Shepton Mallet were also in good form, winning 2-0 at home to Saltash United who have made a poor start to the season.

After 13 successive away matches, Wellington managed to play their first home game on their ground at the Playing Field last week - against Barnstaple Town but the game had to be abandoned because of a floodlit failure with the score 0-0.

Wellington were giving a good account of themselves against the North Devon outfit and could have been ahead when the game was brought to a halt by the referee after an hour’s play.

It was not possible to restart the game but the lights were looked at over the weekend and it was not found to be a big problem.

It was an ironic situation because the Wellington club have only recently applied for planning permission to replace their lights which have been in use for 20 years.
