Clifton II 28 Midsomer Norton 34 and Midsomer Norton II 25 Clevedon II 14: What a run for Midsomer Norton Rugby Club, two wins in one weekend!
‘The King of Clifton’ Rob Viol scored two on his return to Station Road as Norton triumphed in a dominant team display that earned a bonus-point win.
The first half was a tight affair, and the home side opened the scoring. But a young Norton team responded swiftly. The ball was kicked to prop Mitch Rose, who was magnificent on the day, and he was too much to handle for the home side before offloading to Viol who finished with aplomb. A conversion and penalty from Taylor gave Norton a 10-7 lead.
It was in the first twenty minutes of the second half that Norton pulled far enough away to end the game as a contest. After Taylor’s boot had extended the lead, Anderson scored after more great work from Viol. Quick recycling then saw Mclachlan power over from close before Jeffery and Viol combined superbly to take the score to 34-7.
Norton had chances to extend the lead further before Clifton rallied scoring three tries in the final five minutes - but such was the lead it was never going to be enough.
At Norton Down the second XV ran out 25-14 over Clevedon II to maintain a 100% record this campaign with Denning, Rideout, George and Edgell scoring tries.
This Saturday the 1st XV host Clevedon and the 2nd XV travel to Oldfield. Both are 3pm kick-off. Alex Davis
