If last week’s victory represented a high point for Mendip, then the match this week against bottom-placed Clevedon was very definitely a low point in their league campaign.

Within a few minutes of the starting whistle, Mendip gifted the home side the opening goal. Rather than that being the wake-up call which was quite obviously needed, Clevedon then managed to score again shortly after to double their tally.

Going two goals down quite early on in the match increasingly became quite a barrier for the visitors to overcome. They certainly had their chances, with nearly half a dozen shots on goal going just wide of the post throughout the match. Good work from Karen Inns in attack and Olivia Collins in defence was noteworthy, but generally, Mendip struggled to find their form and even get the basics right.

Mendip’s Player of the Match was left wing Connie Glover who showed great pace and determination to create attacking chances. She was unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty flick for a foot on the line from her goal bound shot, which was unseen by the umpire.

With only two matches left and their place in the league not assured, Mendip must put this match behind them and hope for better things next Saturday. They stay at home in Midsomer Norton to face Knowle, 1.30 p.m. start at Norton Hill School.
