After a whole season of disappointing results, the men finally managed a clean sweep of wins in the final match of the season. Whilst this was too late for the Firsts and Fourths to avoid finishing fifth out of six (and hence probable relegation), the Fifths recorded their fourth win on the trot to finish mid-table!
The Thirds, robbed of promotion by the admin error of last week, will be clear favourites to win their division next season. Meanwhile, the Seconds have amassed 66 points, normally easily enough to be promoted, but a whisker short of second-placed Knowle’s 68.
The standard of the Avon League seems to have gone up a notch this season. This is evidenced by the Fourths, who were narrowly relegated last season, and by fielding similar teams to last year, should have been challenging for promotion. However, an extremely challenging Division Eight meant that results went against them!
The Ladies have had a cracking good season, with the Seconds, Thirds and Fourths all achieving promotion (the Seconds and Thirds as champions!). The Firsts finished in fifth position, not bad for their first year in a challenging Division One.
I would like to thank all the players this season, particularly the reserves who stepped in at short notice to cover last minute problems. Bob Sonderman is the hero here, because he did it several times! The Captains also deserve a round of applause for organising their teams, week in, week out, and coping with the many demands of players and Men’s Co-ordinator!
On 28th July, the Late Summer Leagues start, and Writhlington field two Mixed, two Men’s Seniors and one Ladies Seniors team – plenty of tennis for everyone to get involved in!
