OUR council’s ambitious regeneration plans are progressing in Midsomer Norton and Radstock. We are delivering projects to revitalise our town centres in collaboration with local town councils and other partner organisations, including the West of England Combined Authority, Historic England and the UK government.

Midsomer Norton’s new Market Square will create a multi-use public space to host markets and events, supporting local businesses and creating a great setting for the refurbishment of the Town Hall. It is part of the £3.7m Midsomer Norton High Street Regeneration Programme. A lot of the works are not that visible because the scheme includes strengthening the River Somer culvert. We are working hard to minimise disruption during construction which is expected to be completed by early 2025. For updates on the programme of works, visit yourmidsomernorton.co.uk.

Meanwhile a ‘Shop, Dine and Visit Local’ campaign has been launched in Midsomer Norton with backing from businesses and B&NES Council to highlight the town’s independent shops, restaurants, cafes and other enterprises.

In Radstock, a new hub will be created encompassing a café, a home for the community library and space for community and cultural events following the purchase of the Trinity building by Radstock Town Council.

This project is made possible by the partnership between B&NES Council and Radstock Town Council which has already unlocked over £700,000 in investment. The Town Council acquired Trinity Church earlier this year. Initial works will focus on maintenance, with plans for redevelopment to follow with additional fundraising needed.

I hope you can make the most of the summer and enjoy what is on offer locally. If you can, do take part in this year’s expanded Somer Valley Walking Festival, which runs from Friday September 6 to Sunday September 8, it’s a great way to experience our beautiful surroundings. The festival is hosted by Somer Valley Rediscovered and the Somer Valley Ramblers. Visit the Somer Valley Rediscovered website for the full programme.

Our area’s unique heritage and cultural sites should enrich everyone’s lives. To make the Roman Baths, Victoria Art Gallery and Parade Gardens in Bath available free of charge to residents, the council relaunched its Discovery Card which gives all B&NES residents free access to these sites, as well as discounts to restaurants, spas and other attractions. You can sign up for your free Discovery Card online at https://beta.bathnes.gov.uk/apply-for-discovery-card or ask for one at any of the collection locations.
