CAMERTON and Peasedown Croquet Club’s High Handicap team were in action at the end of June when they welcomed six players from Llandaff, Cardiff, to their four full size lawns in Peasedown.

It was a fine if slightly chilly day. The excellent condition of the Peasedown lawns was appreciated by the visitors, whose home ground is a former bowls club converted into two fairly small croquet lawns.

After the first three rounds of croquet, the score stood at six points each, so it was all to play for after the buffet lunch provided by CPCC team members.

In the afternoon sessions, Llandaff just shaded it, ending up 11-9 winners. Croquet can be a game of very small margins – the afternoon session saw some very close games, with two draws and two games in which Camerton and Peasedown lost on the 13th (golden) hoop.

CPCC’s most successful player was Angela Crofts, with 2 wins and 2 draws from 5 games. All of Llandaff’s points came from 4 of their players, with Hazel Bowen belying her 14 handicap by winning 4 of her 5 games. CPCC Club Reporter for this match was Peter Buchanan.
