PAULTON Rovers were beaten 2-1 away by Oldland Abbotonians in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western League on Good Friday, losing out to two late goals by the home side.
Rovers could not have made a better start, going ahead after only four minutes when Corey Rawlings netted after a cross by Will Osborne dipped after catching the wind before crashing against a post.
It was the perfect start and the confidence began to flow through the team. The next twenty minutes or so were dominated by Rovers with Milo Murgatroyd, in particular, being a thorn in the side of the Oldland defence.
Oldland grew into the half as the game wore on but were unable to test Dan Jackson in any meaningful way.
The second half was a different affair with Oldland very much in the game. However, Murgatroyd still managed to dance around three defenders in the 58th minute but his flicked shot was saved. They should have gone further ahead in the 78th minute when a long ball out from the back found Kye Simpson who held the ball up and fed Murgatroyd on the edge of the box. His shot was again stopped by Kieran Perrin in the Oldland goal.
Moments later, Oldland were level. Perrin launched the ball out from the back deep into the Rovers half. It was headed away by Billy Padfield but only as far as substitute, Kris Miller, who volleyed a sweet return shot over Dan Jackson.
Things spilled over in the final minutes with George Fowler getting sin binned. The Oldland winner came with some controversy as they pushed forward, two of the hosts players seemed to go down very easily. Never the less, a free kick on the right-hand corner of the box was given and was beautifully curled in low by Owen Lingard.
