WELTON Rovers went down to a 3-0 home defeat against Brixham AFC in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western League.

With this difficult season drawing to a close, Welton were looking to try and get something positive out of a game where their visitors required three points to archive a certain playoff position and that is just what Brixham achieved in yet another bad day at the office for Welton.

The game got underway in bright Spring sunshine and within the first five minutes Brixham should have been in front with Cole Hanford and Charlie Johansen both squandering early chances in front of goal.

Welton responded earning a corner following good work from Rohan Nelson. The delivery into the box was cleared and fell to Nelson on the edge of the area who fired in his shot which was cleared. Brixham then pressed the Welton defence and got the vital opening goal when Reece Somers was found on the right; he found Johansen unmarked in front of goal who fired in from close range.

Welton’s response to this early setback saw Arian Askari set off to attack the visitors goal but he thumped his shot high over the bar. Just before the halftime whistle Askari was found at the far post but his close range header went inches wide of the upright.

The second half started with Brixham probing for more goals to make the game safe and they were rewarded in the 60th minute when Finn Newell raced through the static Welton defence and cracked his shot that went in off the far post - much to the delight of the travelling Brixham supporters who had made the trip up from Devon.

Ten minutes later it was game, set and match to the visitors when Newell got his second and Brixham’s third when he finished off in style a flowing attack from deep.

This Saturday, April 12th, Welton are at home to Barnstaple Town kick off 3pm.
