136 men competed for the Flower Centenary Cup at Mendip with the Saturday starters enjoying by far the better weather conditions as the wind blew and the rain poured down on the Sunday.
Division 3 was won by Henry Lewer with a net 68 after count back from Roland Greenway and G Hancock. Division 2 went to the ever consistent Brian Smith with 68 with L J Moore 2nd with 70 and Glynn Haddock 3rd with 71 on count back. Division 1 was won by Neil Onslow with 68 after count back from R Cook with P Lewis 3rd with 69. However the overall winner was 6 handicapper Rob Edney with a best of Competition score of 67. Well done Rob.
The nearest the pin competition saw a win for John Ellis from Andy Griffith and Chris Butland.
The Mendip Ladies held a very successful Open Bowmaker which attracted just under 100 players with the majority being visitors. Despite Covid rules being in place, arrangements ran smoothly including the off course catering and visitors were fulsome in their praise regarding the course condition. The winning visitors Team with 73 points came from Farrington with a Team from Thornbury 2nd with 72 and a low handicap combined Team (total handicaps for the three ladies combined were 20) from Saltford and Burnham with 69. The best Visitor/Mendip Team with 68 was June Symonds accompanied by 2 Farrington ladies and the best Mendip Team with 59 were Dee Gansworthy, Nichola Croft and Liz Rose.
The Ladies Alliance B Team entertained Saltford and although the final score was 3-11 that did not reflect the closeness of the matches. Margaret Allen, making her debut gained a victory with Elaine P Richardson halved her match. The Ladies A Team visited Filton and found very wet fairways and preferred lies and one temporary green. Two matches went to the 18th and four to the 17th but Filton ran out winners 4-10 with victories coming from Ellen Reakes and Jan Fukuyama.
The Ladies Friendly Team visited Enmore in not very nice weather experiencing regular downpours. Enmore ran out winners by 4½ - 1½ with Penny Oliver and Eileen Masters winning their match and Allison Rumming and Val Dixon halving theirs.
The Seniors entertained Sherborne on a very breezy day and went down to a 2-4 defeat. Mendip’s Seniors Captain Alan Edwards playing with new Member David Jukes were the sole winners with halves being obtained by Tony Taylor/Martin Sutherland and Peter Rumming/Ian Vincent
The Seniors visited Knowle and came away with a 5½-1½ win. Victories came from Colin Davies/David Jukes, Simon Brand/Steve Cox, John Brooksbank/Jim Boyce, Derek Bellew/Peter Rumming and Martyn Russell/Martin Osborne and Selwyn Rees/Steve Davis secured a half. I do not normally mention losers but as the Seniors Captain was quick to point out after the previous match that he and his partner were the only winners, it’s only fair to mention that this week they were the only losers!
Chairman Rob Needham issued a call to arms asking for volunteers to repaint the Clubhouse Lounge and Dining room together with the lobby before the Clubhouse re-opened to Members. Members rallied around and a hard working Team completed the task within a few days. A very well done to all concerned.
