Wells Golf Club players came out on top in both the gross and nett events at the Somerset County Championships, which were held at Weston- super-Mare Golf Club.
The 36-hole event took place in windy, but dry conditions, with eighty entries all having a handicap of six or below, lowest handicap being +4.
Phil White picked up his first County Championship posting a score of 142 (69 a.m. and 73 p.m.) in testing conditions. White had always been very close to victory in this event, having had four top five finishes in the last five years and after his great contribution to Somerset Golf Union, it’s great to see him finally County Champion.
Charlie Lewis played in his first County Championship and the 5-handicapper put together two great rounds shooting 72 & 74 and winning the best nett competition with (-4). He was the only player to break his handicap in both rounds.
The Wells Senior Men lost 4–3 in an exciting away game at Knowle. The final group lost on the eighteenth with the last putt. Mike Shave recorded a birdie, nett eagle on the difficult fourteenth hole, when his third shot, played from a long way out, went in.
The Avalon team succumbed to their first defeat in the league this season. Ian Burr and Mark Western won and Mike Metcalfe with Glen Crocker halved bringing in 1½ points. The Ladies Alliance team played well against Lansdown and scooped twelve points from the match.
The Mixed Open was enjoyed by a large field of visitors from as far apart as Lutterworth and Lyme Regis. The winning home team were Ian Burr, Simon Lord, and Kim Lord with Hollie Lloyd supporting. The winning visitors came from Wareham.
Winners of the Winter Foursomes were David Gibbon and Bob Lench, who beat Bill O’Callaghan and Bill McCollum, 6&5. In the Plate Competition, Richard Sheard and Andy Williams defeated Colin Payne and John Blench by 5&4.
