The Orchardleigh Ladies held their Captain’s Day on Saturday, 29th June under blue skies and scorching sun; one of the hottest days of the year so far.
Over thirty Ladies took part in the stableford waltz. They went out in teams of three and the scores to count were ‘one, two, three’ over the eighteen holes. After a two-course meal in the clubhouse, the day’s winners were presented with their prizes by Lady Captain, Marie Cusworth.
First overall were Pat Jones, Gloria Barber and Lizzie Bryant with 69 points. Second overall were Christina Francis, Nadine Stock and Anne Kirk with 66 points. The Best Front Nine went to Loes de Kleuver, Audrey Holland and Ann James; whilst the Best Back Nine went to Mel Sutherland, Gail Painter and Mary Lock. The Nearest the Pin winner was Sarah Hynds (7th). Meanwhile, the Putting Competition winner was Liz South.
The halfway house put on by Marie Cusworth and husband, Patrick, was very welcome, as were the cold flannels and water bottles they supplied us with from the balloon-festooned Captain’s buggy. Jim Worsley, the Club Chairman, set up and ran the putting competition, which helped raise money for the club charity.
On 4th July, the Orchardleigh Ladies held their Macey Cup (for the over-70s) and the Pudney Pitcher (for the under-70s). Winning the Macey Cup was Sue Chalker with 30 points on countback. Winning the Pudney was Christine Arnold with 36 points on countback. The Keysell Cup, which was held on 6th July, brought in some high scoring with Sue Sweet winning on 40 points.
Other Orchardleigh achievements were Anne Regler and Sue Sweet retaining their trophy at the Somerset County Senior Ladies GA Pairs Betterball competition held at Taunton & Pickeridge by winning with 38 points. Sue Sweet, Marion Underhill and Lorraine Collings were runners-up (on countback) in the SCSLGA Three-Ball Bowmaker held at The Mendip, with 80 points.
