The winner of the Seniors’ Jones Cup was Nick Wilson, who beat Bill McCollum on the 17th green in a close and tense final. 44 players had entered the knockout competition, which began back in April.
The Stragglers played Minehead & West Somerset at Wells. The first pairing of George Davis and Steve Porter set the team off to a good win of 2/1. The next pair of Terry Searle and Phil Kenworthy lost 2/1. Captain Terry Pearce and Paul Cullen, whose opposition were serious, also lost.
Ben Jones and Jon Mackness met a strong pairing, as they also lost 4/3. Finally, the last pair of John Hockey and Bill Levell won 2/1, with the result being Wells 2 Minehead 3, which means Minehead won overall 6/4.
Wells Seniors enjoyed a particularly fine day for their match at Mendip Spring, and came away with a splendid victory by three-and-a-half to two-and-a-half. The winning pairs were Bill McCollum and Ken Ford, George Davis and Nick Carter, and Steve Rowse and Chris Strickland – the latter two in very emphatic style by 6+5 and 8+7, respectively!
Glyn Hallett and Bill Carruthers secured the half to help clinch the team’s win, which is quite a rare success on this rather lengthy and testing course.
Erica Klim and Mike Metcalf worked well together to win the trophy for the Mixed Summer knockout for a second year. They played Ladies’ Champion Glynis Slate, and her husband Philip, in a keenly contested game.
