Fifty seniors took part in the Parsons Trophy in excellent, benign conditions. Dave Hayward and Mike Metcalfe had 38 points, Bryan Powell, Peter Leverick and Bill McCollum had 39. McCollum won third place on count back. Craig McConnell, on 40 points, was beaten into second place by Ron Johnson, whose 42 points was due to steady play and amazing recovery shots.
The Avalon game at Worlebury saw the Wells players finding the windy conditions not to their liking, and they succumbed to a 4–1 loss. Simon Jackson/Pete Walker lost 4&3; Mike Metcalfe/Malcom Terry lost 3&2; Glen Crocker/Jamie Marklew lost 3&2; Jason Huck/James Rutt lost 5&3. Last out and our only win was Ian Burr and Bob Lench, with Burr keeping them in the game until the thirteenth, when Lench went on a run of four pars in a row, winning the game 2&1.
The first pair in the Straggglers match was Steve Heath and Adam Holiday, who came in with a creditable half. Bill McCollom and Steve Porter lost 4&3. Captain Bernhard Young and his trusty partner, Terry Searle, put up a brave fight, but lost 2&1. John Hockey and Bill Levell battled hard, but lost one down. John Baker and Craig McConnell had a very tight game, eventually winning two up.
The Ladies’ Alliance team played at Weston, with Erica Klim halving her match to save us from whitewash.
Wells’ Seniors enjoyed a fine day of golf away at Orchardleigh and a keenly-contested match was halved. There were wins for Steve Rowse and Piers Dalby, Bill O’Callaghan and Andrew Boatswain and Tim Harris and Alan Elkins. Pete Twinney and Terry Pearce secured the half.
The Mixed Friendly played at Knowle saw seven pairs enjoying the challenge in this Greensomes format. Three Wells pairs won and it was considered an honourable half.
