WELTON Rovers went down 2-1 at home to Oldland Abbotonians in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western League.

It was the visitors who pressed and Welton had to soak up early pressure. Tom Blake sliced through the Welton defence only to sky his effort high over the bar. Oldlands took a quick free kick which found Aaron Mansfield and his delivery found Charlie Davis free in front of the Welton goal but his shot flew over the bar.

Welton keeper Adrienne Cordillet then produced an outstanding save to keep out a diving header from Blake. Welton at last launched an attack; good play by Kaylen Edward saw him beat two men, drive into the area only to thump his shot high over the Oldlands’ bar.

After a goalless first half, Oldlands took the game to Welton straight from the restart and had two early penalty claims denied by the referee and Tyrone Tucker-Dixon was sent to the sin bin. Welton weathered the early second half storm and Edward saw his shot go wide. Welton’s best attack of the game saw Joshua Roddy and Joe Kemmery combined well in a pacy flowing move only for Kemmery’s goal bound shot to be saved by Oldlands keeper Harry Victor.

The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 60th minute when Blake was adjudged to have been brought down in the area. Blake took the spot kick himself but it was brilliantly saved by Cordillet. However ten minutes later the visitors did open their account when a free kick on the edge of the area was well struck by Harry Halghton.

This was followed in the 78th minute by an absolute worldly goal from substitute Alfie Davis. Welton carried on and took the game to Oldlands and were rewarded in stoppage time when Edward scored from close range. Bob Allard
